IFFR 50 press conferences and filmmakers’ talks kick off this week, and there’s loads to look forward to. Oscar contenders Mads Mikkelsen, Dea Kulumbegashvili, and Kelly Reichardt are giving Big Talks that IFFR is making freely available anywhere in the world. Big winners from previous festivals and Oscar contenders screen at the festival, and exciting new works have their world premieres in mere days. We go in-depth on some of the talks and films that are our most anticipated films of 2021!
New Year, New Festivals!
A new year, a new president, and lots of new content coming down the stream, from festivals across the country and the globe.
Due to the uniquely problematic nature of these times, most festivals have gone virtual, which enables us here at Ride the Omnibus to cover loads of festivals this year. Both due to disability and a lack of time and funds, attending the massive number of festivals we will be this season would be a physical impossibility in more normal times. The move to take these festivals online not only makes them more financially viable for the viewing public, but broadens access for all, including those with disabilities.
Oh, Comics! My Comics! (Of 2020)
In spite of a slow start for the printers, creatives and their editors have been hard at work putting together some incredible content to distract us from the world around us this year. I want to applaud everyone who successfully transported me to other realms, but alas, I have to winnow it down.
My choices here were guided mostly by the books I never had the chance to review this year. You can find my words on various other beloved works from the year on comicsbookcase.com, but listed below are the books that we still need to talk about. Reflections on 2020
My thinking has evolved in many directions in 2020, to the past, the present, and the future. This episode and more to come this month will talk about the things that got me and my guests through 2020. But first I need to acknowledge the fact that I am only able to do so because of incredible privileges I have as a white American woman that not everyone shares, and I need to acknowledge that.
